A sweatpants vendor at Circle, a suburb of Accra, Vedomon Perfect, has advised Ghanaians on GhanaWeb TV’s Everyday People programme not to let the current economic hardships dictate how they live their lives or pursue their dream careers.
According to him, while he acknowledges the economic challenges Ghana is facing, he believes individuals can improve their situations without attributing their struggles to the government.
Perfect who has been in the sweatpants business for the past four years admitted that things have significantly changed over time; however, as a determined individual, he has decided not to let these changes become a challenge for him.
“Things have really changed but most of us don’t put our minds on those kinds of kinds of stuff because one thing I know is that your economy is your own pocket so even though the government affects the market, you also can put personal measures that will help you do well. So, I’ll not really blame the government… even though it’s bad; everybody knows that it’s bad but you have to also go forward and do something for yourself,” he said.
Perfect who hails from the Volta Region also told GhanaWeb's Eugenia Diabah that he engaged in a couple of jobs in the Volta Region, but no matter how hard he worked, he wasn’t earning enough money to save for school.
Unable to thrive in the situation, he decided to move to Accra in 2020 to achieve his goal.
“A few years ago, I was not in Accra; I was in the Volta Region. Things are moving better within Accra than in the deprived areas, so we needed to move ahead. You know, as a man, you have to look for something for yourself to live a better life. I completed SHS in 2018. I engaged in different jobs in the Volta Region, but I felt that they were not paying. That’s why I moved to Accra,” he said.
“I came to Accra purposely to go to school, but you have to raise some funds for yourself and be financially okay before going to school. I have been over here for a while—for four years. I was introduced to this business through a friend who is now my brother.”
His arrival in Accra landed him a job as a sweatpants vendor, which he was introduced to by a friend and has been peddling for four years.
Perfect Vedomon says he wants to be a business guru and that one of the reasons he’s going to school is to establish connections, not just to obtain a degree.
