A presenter with TV XYZ, Oheneba Boamah Bennie, has issued a stern warning to pastors who were silent when the Akufo-Addo government was mismanaging the country, telling them not to dare open their mouths to criticize President John Mahama now.
Speaking on his Gumbe show, the media personality, known for his feisty nature, said such men of God do not have the moral grounds to criticize Mahama's government, which has assumed power to reset the country’s economy, which was abysmally managed by the previous Akufo-Addo administration.
"If, during the Akufo-Addo regime, you kept quiet, do the same now that Mahama has assumed power. You should not criticize the Mahama government. If you dare speak against the Mahama administration, you will be visited in your house by the boys. We will storm your church, and you will be fear-gripped, but we will not steal anything. The pastor who is spewing foolish talk is the one we have a case to settle with."
He continued: "We have realized that even when God has not spoken to you [pastors], you come out and speak in His name. Now, if any pastor says anything foolish about this election that has brought Mahama to power, and Ghanaians have asked him to take his time and reset the economy, we will beat the hell out of you. By the time John Mahama asks us to stop, you will have fainted. He [Mahama] is compassionate; maybe he will come and visit you, but we would have weakened you long ago. So people should be very careful."
Oheneba Boamah Bennie was sentenced to prison on Tuesday, February 8, 2022, by the Accra High Court after the Attorney-General, Godfred Dame, charged him with contempt over his claims against President Akufo-Addo and judges.
Justice Elfreda Dankyi said the 36-year-old was guilty of breaching the peace and publishing false news, contrary to Sections 207 and 208 (1) respectively of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
On December 14, 2020, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service arrested the Accra-based Power FM presenter for threatening and insulting President Akufo-Addo.
Oheneba Boamah is said to have recorded a live video on his Facebook page in which he was heard insulting and issuing a series of threats to the President.
He claimed that after the December 2020 polls, the President met with some judges, including the Chief Justice, Kwasi Anin-Yeboah. He claimed the meeting was an attempt by the President to influence the judges if the opposition candidate, John Mahama, decided to petition the courts over the election results.
The presenter was arrested after he honored an invitation by the CID over the issue.
He gained his freedom in the early hours of Monday, February 21, 2022, after being jailed for two weeks.
