Asankrangwa (W/R) April 30 - GNA- Mr. Joseph Boahen Aidoo, Western Regional Minister has noted with concern the rising tendency of some parents and guardians who encourage their wards to engage in "galamsey" and trading at the expense of their education.
He said there should be concerted efforts to check this tendency because it could derail the education policy of the government in the region.
Answering questions at a people's assembly at Asankrangwa on Thursday, Mr. Aidoo suggested to all district assemblies in the region to institute bye-laws that would deal with parents and guardians who shirk their responsibilities to educate their children.
The Regional Minister reminded the people that the most precious legacy they could bequeath to their children is education, saying, "you will be destroying the future of your children if you encourage them to engage in "galamsey" and trading when they must be in the classroom."
Mr. Aidoo urged parents not to do anything that would disrupt their children's attention from their education since good education is the bedrock for the development of every society.
He explained the rationale behind the recent increases in petroleum prices and said it was not the intention of the government to bring hardships to the people.
He commended the youth of Breman for coming together to form a cooperative to enhance their lots.
Mrs Anna Nyamekye, deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture told the people that Ghana cannot continue to depend on aid from donors. She therefore, urged them to honour their tax obligations to enhance development.
Mr. Samuel Owusu-Darko, deputy Minister of Health advised the people to register and pay their premiums for the area's health insurance scheme to take-off.
