The Vice Presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has cautioned trainee nurses and midwives against falling prey to temporary financial incentives from the government ahead of the 2024 general elections.

Speaking to students of the Esiama and Asanta SDA Nursing and Midwifery Training School in the Elembele Constituency during the start of her three-day campaign tour in the Western Region, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang warned that the government might offer financial inducements, such as mobile money transfers, to secure their votes, only to neglect them afterward.

She urged the trainees to think long-term and focus on the future, pointing to the ongoing challenges faced by the two nursing and midwifery training schools.

“Why are they not using the money to build the male hostel? Have they forgotten that the lecturers don’t have a place to sleep? Have they forgotten that you need a skills lab? Where is their emphasis on that?” she asked. “But they will bring you some momo to go and vote for them, and the project will continue to remain unfinished.”

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang highlighted the health sector policies of the previous Mahama administration, which she said aimed at expanding healthcare facilities and ensuring employment for nursing and midwifery graduates.

She claimed that these policies were misrepresented by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) through propaganda.

She assured the students that the NDC has better policies for trainee nurses and midwives, including automatic employment after graduation.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang called on them to vote massively for John Dramani Mahama in the upcoming December 7 elections, stating that the NDC is committed to creating a sustainable future for the youth, free from false promises.

Describing John Dramani Mahama as a caring, truthful, and visionary leader, she emphasized that he is the best candidate to lead the country and secure a sustainable future for the nation’s unemployed youth.
