Kumasi, March 08, GNA - Lieutenant Michel Yao Borbi of the Fourth Garrison Education Unit has asked the country's civilian population not to perceive the military as a "bunch of bullies" but credible partners in development who could be relied upon for assistance in times of need. He said it was about time the public was helped to shed all negative perceptions they have about the military as an institution. Lt Borbi was interacting with a section of the press in Kumasi during an Open Day held by the fourth Battalion of Infantry (4BN) in Kumasi on Monday.

The day was instituted to provide an opportunity for the public to have an insight into the Armed Forces, helping to strengthen the civil/military relationship.

It formed part of activities marking the 48th anniversary celebration of Ghana's independence.

Lt Borbi expressed the hope that the decision by the Defence Ministry to organise such open days would significantly help to ensure the establishment of effective rapport between civilians and soldiers.

''By so doing, the military would be demystified and allow for greater co-operation between the armed forces and the general public.'' As part of the day, the soldiers engaged in mock shooting, foot and arms drill and displayed some of the basic weapons in their armoury.
