Residents of Old Fadama have warned that the settlement should not be referred to as Sodom and Gomorrah as it tarnishes the image of the community.

According to them, the community has been branded as a hub for criminals over the years and that perception must stop.

The Secretary of the Old Fadama Community Association, Frederick Opoku, said this at a press conference in Accra on Thursday 13 April following bloody clashes between Konkombas and Dagombas living in the community on Tuesday 11 April which claimed two lives.

He noted that some properties in the community had been destroyed as a result of the clash and urged the authorities to help bring the perpetrators to book.

“Fadama has been tagged as a place for criminals that they say even at church or mosque you will see criminals… You go to other parts of the country you will see crime upon crime being perpetrated. It is time we have to safeguard the name of Old Fadama. It started as Sodom and Gomorrah and I stood that that name, Sodom and Gomorrah, must not be used even by the President of the Republic of Ghana. No minister should dare use that name because it tarnishes the image of the community,” he warned.

“We are peace-loving people. Inasmuch as crime can be committed at any part of the country, it is evil for anybody from the presidency to minsters to tag us as Sodom and Gommorah. We are not too happy about that name.

“Old Fadama is changing for the better. Inasmuch as something has happened, it can happen anywhere in the country. That’s why we are opening our doors to security personnel for investigations.”

He noted that the clash between Konkombas and Dagombas was not about who won or lost but must be treated as a crime and, therefore, the community condemned the act. “We condemn it fully and that we are going to open our doors to the security agencies for investigations,” he assured.

Meanwhile, Old Fadama Konkomba Youth Leader Usif Abdulai has advised all Komkomba youth to desist from violence. According to him, they should leave the police to conduct their own investigations into their clash with the Dagombas.
