Dormaa Chief calls for accountability on revenue utilisation

Okatakyie Ansu Gyeabour, Dormaa Adomakomahene, has called on Ghanaians to make conscious efforts at demanding accountability and transparency from leaders in the usage of tax revenue.

He said leaders owe it a duty to account for the revenue they collect from the people by explaining how they used the money, adding “when this is done it can engender trust between the people and their leaders to pay more taxes since people may know the benefit accrued to them after paying taxes”.

Okatakyie Ansu Gyeabour was speaking at a stakeholders consultation on increase participation of the marginalised group in the up-coming district level election and the decision – making process.

The Chief called for the empowerment of women at all levels to whip up interest and participation in local governance.

He said modern day governance requires strengthening and sustaining collaboration between stakeholders and leaders in the decentralisation process in promoting local governance.

Speaking on the topic: “Electoral process and modalities for 2015 district level elections,” Mr Christian Boafo – Offeh, Municipal Director of Electoral Commission, said a total of 87 aspiring candidates, filed to contest the district level elections in the municipality.

Out of the number, 84 were males while three were females.

He said there would be no unit committee elections in Dormaa Central Municipality due to the low number of candidates.

Mr Kwaku Adinkra Kosopre, Municipal Director of National Commission for Civic Education, noted that although local governance is crucial for development at the grassroot level, there is low concentration in building appropriate structures to promote democracy at that level.
