Dormaa-Ahenkro (B/A), Nov. 20, GNA - Members of the Dormaa District Assembly have unanimously endorsed Mr Daniel Gyan Kumi, Assistant Registrar in charge of Examinations at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, as their new Presiding Member.
The endorsement came after four inconclusive rounds of voting, supervised by officials of the District Electoral Commission. Initially six Assembly Members filed to compete for the position, but none of them could secure the required two-thirds majority after four rounds of voting and run-offs, which lasted for 195 minutes. When three other members of the house put in their nominations to vie for the position in the fifth round of voting, the 69-member house decided to review their stand.
Two of the final three nominees therefore withdrew their candidature and threw their weight behind Mr Gyan Kumi. In the ensuing vote, 67 out of the 69 members, representing 96 percent voted for Mr Gyan-Kumi to occupy the position.
In his acceptance speech, Mr Gyan Kumi thanked members for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to co-ordinate all relevant human and material resources for the growth of the Assembly.
Squadron Leader Benjamin Anane Asamoah (rtd), Dormaa District Chief Executive, expressed regret about the divisive tendency among the members during the voting, but expressed the hope that the Assembly's subsequent meetings would be held in a serene and united atmosphere.
