Luck run out of a 52-year-old Hayward Kwasi Druyeh, a regular supplier of Indian Hemp to students in Dormaa-Ahenkro, when Dormaa-Ahenkro police, upon a tip-off, ambushed and apprehended him during one of his transactions.
Druyeh, who has since appeared before the Dormaa Circuit Court, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment in-hard labour.
Chief Inspector Mr. Bismarck Boye-Lartey, told the court presided by Mr. Alexander Osei Tutu that, Druyeh owned a drinking spot near Low-Cost, a suburb of Dormaa-Ahenkro.
He said the police had a tip-off on May 12 that the convict apart from the alcoholic beverages also sold Indian hemp and students were mostly his customers.
The prosecutor said the police ambushed him around 1600 hours and caught him red-handed.
A search conducted on him led to the discovery of a quantity of dried leaves and seeds suspected to be Indian hemp, five wrappers of similar dried leaves, a pair of scissors and neatly cut pieces of paper ostensibly designed as wrappers for the hemp.
Chief Inspector Boye-Lartey said, Druyeh admitted the offence in a caution statement to the police and said students in Dormaa-Ahenkro largely patronised his stuff.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Mahamud Yusif, Dormaa Municipal Police Commander, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency expressed concern about the spate of wee smoking among the youth in general and students in particular in the area.
He said as the police continued to locate and arrest the smokers from their hide-outs for prosecution, the onus lay on parents, guardians and relatives to warn and advise the youth to refrain from the practice.**
