Double Track policy: GES summons Regional, District Directors to Accra

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has summoned all its Regional and District Directors across the country to Accra for a meeting over the implementation of the Double Track system in senior high schools set to be operational in September.

The meeting comes off on Monday, a day ahead of the Minister of Education Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh holds a media briefing on the new policy.

“Whatever policy that concerns pre-tertiary education it’s our mandate as Ghana Education Service to ensure that its implementation becomes a success. We as GES are also meeting them[Regional and District Directors] to strategize as to how we can implement double track policy to a successful end.” GES Public Relations Officer, Cassandra Twum Ampofo said.

Meanwhile, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said the much-talked-about, double track system will not be applicable in all Senior High Schools(SHS) in the country.

“This double track calendar system is not going to be applied to all senior high schools but only to those whose current capacity will be exceeded by the number of admitted students. This system will not destroy our educational system, as the professional naysayers would want you to believe,” President Akufo-Addo revealed when he joined the Chiefs and people of of Ada in the Dangbe East of the Greater Accra Region to celebrate the Asafotufiami festival.



The NPP government has come under intense public criticism following the introduction of the policy which many stakeholders say will frustrate education in the second-cycle level.

But President Akufo-Addo has indicated that the policy would only be applicable in schools overwhelmed by infrastructure challenges due to a large number of students admitted under the free SHS programme.

In spite of the many criticisms on the double track system, government maintains that it’ll work smoothly, insisting that it has consulted widely on the programme.



Government has announced that it is set to roll out its double Tracking System which will be similar to the semester mode of learning applicable in the universities at the SHS level.

The objectives of the Double-track School Calendar are to create room to accommodate increase in enrolment, reduce class sizes, increase contact hours and to increase the number of holidays.
