Downpour leaves Afienya flooded

Afienya, June 21, GNA - Afienya in the Dangme West District, was on Sunday hit by flooding, following several hours of heavy rains. Farm lands, houses, shops, recreational centres, fuel stations and vehicles were submerged by water.

Residents of the town, who expressed fear that there could be lost of lives due to the magnitude of the floods, said the rains started at about 0400 hours and ended at around 1200 hours.

The GNA observed that the Afienya Police Station and the Afienya toll booth areas were totally covered by water.

Wooden structures, houses and container shops were submerged to the lintel level while cars could only be identified by their roofs. The rain water, which was forcing its way under a bridge, gushed onto the streets, resulting in floods due to unavailability of drains. Some of the residents stood in awe on the shoulders of the streets discussing their predicament.

They lamented the construction of buildings on water ways and the lack of proper drainage system in the area.

Officials of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) were spotted rummaging through the affected areas in search of victims The police were seem controlling heavy vehicular traffic and military personnel, dressed in lifejackets, were also spotted in a rescue boat in the floods.
