Accra, July 21, GNA - Dr Alhaji Mustapha Ahmed, National Democratic Congress Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, has been elected as the Vice President of the Western African Region of the Global Parliamentarians on Habitat (GPH).
This was contained in a release signed by Mr Abraham Otabil, Head of Public Relations Unit of the Ministry of Water Resource, Works and Housing, and copied to the Ghana News Agency on Thursday.
GPH is an international organization of parliamentarians dedicated to sustainable development of human settlements.
It was founded in 1987 in Japan with the support of the UN HABITAT, which promotes sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.
The release said Dr Ahmed was expected to lead in bringing his experience, expertise, knowledge and influence to bear on decision-making process to foster coordinated action by government, communities, private sector and non-governmental organizations for sustainable development in the area of shelter and human settlements.
It said: Through the international network of parliamentarians, the goals of the Habitat Agenda are advocated in the individual national parliaments and efforts to achieve these goals are actively encouraged."
The release said the worldwide work of GPH was coordinated by the Board of Directors adding that the President served as the President of the Board whiles the Vice Presidents served as Presidents for the Regional Councils.
It said; There are regional GPH groups for the continents of Africa, America, Asia and Europe," adding that the UN-supported organization met regularly at both regional and global forums.
Dr Ahmed was born on 8th June, 1956 and is fluent in English, Hausa, Ga and French.
