Political Science lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr Richard Amoako Baah is calling on parliament to make a firm statement in the president’s remission of the Montie trio.

President John Dramani Mahama has come under serious criticism after invoking his power of clemency effectively remitting the sentencing of the three Supreme Court Contemnors under article 72 of the 1992 constitution.

The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and some friends of the incarcerated trio which put together the petition to the president is however elated Salifu Maase, alias Mugabe, and two panellists, Alistair Nelson, and Godwin Ako Gunn, who were handed a four-month prison sentence can now walk free.

But Dr Amoako Baah believes there is still a window for parliament, especially the minority, to push as far as an impeachment.

Speaking on the Ultimate Breakfast Show, Dr Amoako Baah explained, “There is something called the delicate checks and balances. Whenever two of the arms of government are in conflict, the third one that is not in the conflict is the one who stands up to put things in the right place and this is left with parliament.”

He was however quick to add, “Unfortunately the majority is also NDC and they are afraid for their own position so they will not act. But it doesn’t mean the minority cannot act. They should make a statement.

He indicated that even though the minority does not have the numbers, they should start an impeachment process very quickly just to make a statement regardless of whether or not they will succeed in that regard.
