The Sissala East District Assembly, traditional rulers and other stakeholders, have conferred the names of streets on some of their illustrious sons and daughters, as well as selected African personalities and expatriates in Tumu.

The Assembly bestowed a street name on Dr. Hilla Limann of blessed memory; the first Sissala to become a President of Ghana.

The Assembly acknowledged the good works and exemplary leadership qualities of Dr. Limann: “his rule had no stain of corruption”, they said.

The Assembly said other qualities of Dr. Limann, especially his democratic principles and love for fellow Ghanaians, had made the people in the district proud of him, hence the naming of a street in his name.

It also identified Alhaji Imoro Egala, first elected Member of Parliament of Sissala, first Principal of the first primary school in Sissala and co-founder of the People’s National Party, for honours.

The Assembly said Alhaji Egala’s political contributions to Ghana's democratic dispensation were enormous, describing him as one of the best and finest politicians ever produced in Ghana after Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, hence the naming of a street after him.

At the inauguration of 24 out of 30 streets on Tuesday, the Assembly also named a street after Kuoru Kanton Luri, one of the three prominent chiefs, for initiating the marriage between Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the first President of the Republic of Ghana, and his wife.

Kuori Luri was also the first Vice President of the Northern Regional House of Chiefs, and first President of the Upper Regional House of Chiefs.

The Assembly similarly named a street each, after President Nelson Mandela, first Black President of South Africa, and Captain Sawyer, first white man to come to the district.

Mr. Johnson Saborh, Sissala East District Chief Executive, said apart from honouring persons with good standing, the exercise would help make security management of the communities, revenue collection of the Assembly and identification of people in the various sections in the Tumu Township easier and faster.

The exercise, he said had also brought to light the history of some individuals whose contributions were not made known to the youth, and urged the people to dig into the history of the area and identify persons with sterling qualities for them to be honoured.

Dr. Musheibu Alfa Mohammed, Deputy Upper West Regional Minister, who graced the occasion, commended the Assembly, traditional rulers and other stakeholders in the district for their successful contributions towards the honours.

He said their efforts had helped complement President John Mahama’s dream of identifying places where the people lived.

In a related development, the Jirapa District Assembly also named streets after some prominent sons and daughters for their contributions towards the development of the district in particular, and the Upper West Region and Ghana as a whole.

Among them is Mr. Edward Saalia, a renowned Member of Parliament for Jirapa, and former Minister of Roads and Highways, who brought development and improved road network in the region.

Naa Ansoleh Ganaa, Chief of Jirapa, and former Inspector-General of Police (IGP) was honoured with the naming of a street after him for being the longest ever-serving IGP in Ghana.

Another former Chief of Jirapa, Naa Bapenyiri Yelpoe, was bequeathed with the honour of naming a street after him, for his declaration that all strangers who came to Jirapa were acclimated and provided with land to settle.

He was also instrumental and the brain behind the creation of the Jirapa District.

Reverend Father McNualty, a Catholic Priest, could not be left out in the naming of the streets as he was the brain behind the creation of the Jirapa Credit Union in 1951, the first in Africa.

Madam Vivien Nelly B. Kunko, Jirapa District Chief Executive, said the naming of the streets would make easier identification and access to homes, easy delivery of mail services, and access for ambulance services and Ghana Fire Service in the performance of their duties.
