World Famous Inventor of Fiber Optics and Nanotechnology Expert Dr Thomas O. Mensah was honoured at the Annual Gala of the Ghana Institute of Engineers during the 2018 Engineers Week celebration in Aburi.

The outgoing President Ing Carlien Bou-Chedid presented the Award to him during the Annual Dinner where he was also named a fellow of the Institute. A fellow is the highest level of membership in the engineering profession.

Overall there were 10 new fellows elected in 2018 by the Council of the Institute including Dr Mensah.

The Ghana Institute of Engineers has members and fellows drawn from all the traditional engineering disciplines including mechanical, chemical, electrical, civil, and others making it the most diverse engineering profession in the world.

The President of Ghana was represented by the Minister of Energy, Boakye Agyarko who spoke on his behalf.

During his acceptance speech, Dr Mensah discussed how important the high-speed train will help Ghana as it moves in the 21st century.

He noted that new investments will flow to Ghana, for the creation of manufacturing industries resulting in the creation of more jobs and travel times to the North of the country will be reduced dramatically. This, he said will cut down traffic congestion in Accra.

The Gala brought fellows and members from across the country and the globe allowing friends to meet and reconnect again.

Engineering students also had a chance to meet and interact with more senior and well-established members.

The Gala highlight included the swearing in of a new president of the Institute who takes office immediately supported by the Council of Fellows.

The new president, Ing Amoaning-Yankson is a Civil and Transportation Engineer who has worked on several projects funded by the World Bank in several Countries including Ghana.

Dr Thomas Mensah was humbled by this recognition noting that being recognized by fellow engineers in Ghana was very important to him following recognition by engineers in the United States of America.

He is a Fellow of US Academy of Inventors, an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.

He has several patents in fiber optics and published extensively in peer review journals including chapters of books. He is the author of 4 Books in innovation notably;

Fiber Optics Engineering 1977, Superconductor Engineering 1992, The Right Stuff Comes in Black his Autobiography, 2013 and the International Text Book Nanotechnology Commercialization 2017.
