Member of Parliament for Korle Klottey, Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, and the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Lieutenant-General William Agyapong, on Thursday November 20, 2025 toured the El-Wak Sports Stadium as the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) resumed its 2025/2026 national recruitment exercise.
The two were accompanied by members of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Defence and Interior.
In a viral video shared on X, the delegation was seen inspecting the ongoing procedures and engaging officials overseeing the exercise.
What we know so far about deadly military recruitment stampede
The GAF began the nationwide recruitment process on Wednesday, November 12, 2025. The first phase, which involved documentation and body screening, attracted thousands of applicants who thronged designated centres across the country.
The massive turnout, however, resulted in multiple cases of stampedes.
In the Ashanti Region, five applicants sustained injuries during a rush at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
The incident was confirmed by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene.
A more tragic incident occurred in the Greater Accra Region, where six female applicants lost their lives following a stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium.
Reports indicated that the situation escalated after military officials allegedly instructed some applicants to go home and return the next day.
Six reported dead over stampede during military recruitment exercise
The directive reportedly caused agitation among the already overcrowded applicants, leading to chaos and the subsequent fatalities.
Authorities have since confirmed the deaths and say investigations are underway to determine the exact circumstances that led to the disaster.
The GAF has also assured the public of enhanced crowd-management measures as the recruitment exercise continues.
