Dr Zanetor celebrates the aged in Klottey Korle

Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, Member of Parliament for Klottey-Korle, has expressed her appreciation for the contributions and sacrifices of the aged to the nation's development agenda over the years.

According to her, the aged are “valuable human resource” whose contribution to national development cannot be over-emphasised.

Dr Zanetor expressed this appreciation at a short but impressive programme to appreciate the elderly within the constituency at Osu in Accra, last Saturday.

While extolling the aged for laying a solid foundation for her generation, Dr Zanetor pledged her commitment to implement policies and programmes geared towards the comfort and well being of those who have served the constituency all their lives and are now retired.

"Let me express the profound gratitude of former President Rawlings, our Founder, former President John Mahama and flag-bearer and all constituents to you for the dedicated and persevering service you have rendered to the country," she stated in 'twi' and 'Ga'.

She said despite the fact that some of them might be slow, and have some challenges due to their ages, she believes that there are still a lot more capabilities in them.

Dr Zanetor, therefore, urged them to continue sharing their experience and wisdom to building a good society for the future, stating, "You are still our valuable human resource.”

Over 500 old men and women from Kinkawe, Tudu, Adabraka North, Adabraka Official Town, Asylum-down, Osu-Alata, Osuduku, Ringway and Odorna communities within the Klottey Korle were celebrated.

Dr Zanetor later told Journalists it was an honour and a blessing to spend the day with the senior citizens in the constituency, stating, "these are the people who sowed seeds and now we sit in the shades of those trees. It’s time to carry it forward! Now it’s our turn to honour them and show appreciation for all they have done for us and our great nation."

She again pledged to continue with the development programmes and projects, especially free health screening, registration of children and the aged into the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), support vulnerable children to attain better education, among other social intervention policies.

Dr Zanetor who is a member of the Parliamentary Select Committee of Environment and Science said she would also continue to put pressure on the current government to honour the promises to fight flood in Accra, which affect the constituency.

She said at a town hall meeting last year, the Minister for Works and Housing, Samuel Atta Akyea promised a major construction works on drains in the Greater Accra Region, especially those linking Odawna in the constituency.

The Klottey Korle lawmaker also called on the senior citizens to help in orienting the minds of the youth towards preserving Ghana’s peace and security ahead of the 2020 general elections.

Such an orientation, she noted, would also help in the push for holistic national development and wellbeing, stating, "we need peace to develop the nation and the election should not be violence, people should be allowed to express their right to a political party and the leader they want."

She urged Ghanaians to stand firm and not allow the elections to jeopardize the peace of the country we enjoy over the years.

Other dignitaries at function were former Greater Regional Minister and MP for Kpong-Katamanson, Joseph Nii Afotey Agbo, Mr Harry Zakour, a former National Vice Chairman of NDC, among other constituency executive members and assembly members within the constituency.
