Kumasi, May 9, GNA - The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) is to begin major dredging of the Susan River in June this year, Mr Maxwell Kofi Jumah, the Metropolitan Chief Executive, has stated. He said the project would be carried out with support from the World Bank.
Mr Jumah was addressing the Atonsu-Agogo Town Council at Atonsu in Kumasi at the weekend.
He said the dredging, which would cover a six-kilometre stretch, when completed would bring to an effective end the incident of persistent flooding particularly in areas like Ahinsan, Anloga, Atonsu 'S-Line' and other communities down stream the river after every heavy rainfall.
The MCE said the World Bank had released funds towards the extension of electricity and provision of sanitation facilities at Atonsu-Kuwait, a suburb.
He advised the people to maintain high standard of environmental sanitation.
Mr Adarkwa Yiadom, Town Council Chairman, appealed to the government to terminate the contracts of non-performing contractors who had been awarded jobs in the metropolis. 09 May 04
