Driver fined for knocking down cyclist

Nkawie Ash), Oct. 22, GNA - A circuit court at Nkawie, on Tuesday imposed a one million cedi fine on a 35 year old driver for knocking down a cyclist.

Kwame Boakye the driver, pleaded guilty and will serve a six month jail sentence in default.

The court further ordered Boakye to pay additional 400,000 cedis as compensation to the victim. He will serve another eight months in prison in default.

Police Chief Inspector Carl Michael Adjeng told the court that at about 18 hours on June 16 this year, the victim James Amoah was riding his bicycle from Sepaase to Maakro, near Abuakwa, while the accused was driving from Kumasi towards Bibiani.

He said, the driver saw the cyclist but knocked him down and stopped with the intention of picking him to the hospital.

Chief Inspector Adjeng said, however that when the accused saw a mob coming towards him, he abandoned the victim and drove off and that the victim was taken to the hospital by a good Samaritan.

He said the bicycle was however stolen and so a report was made to the police who arrested he accused and after investigations charged him with the offence.
