Driver weeps in court over death of accident victims

Cape Coast, Jan. 27, GNA- Eric Acquainoo, a 26-years-old driver from Moree near Cape Coast on Tuesday broke down and wept bitterly in court when he was told that three children, knocked down by his vehicle on January 25 died on admission at the hospital.

The plea of Eric who was charged with careless driving, negligently causing harm and unlawful damage were not taken and he was remanded in prison custody to reappear on Tuesday February 10.

Mr Mustapha Logoh, who presided told him to stop weeping and that the remand was in his own interest.

Prosecuting Police Inspector Hope Azasoo told the court that at about 1000 hours last Sunday, Eric who was driving a Toyota pick-up from Moree township towards the Moree junction and in negotiating a curve, the vehicle veered off the road and run into the three children who were walking alone along the road to attend church service.

He said the victims, Kofi Awortwe aged 10 years, Nyame Tsiase, nine and Kofi Annor, six, sustained various degree of injuries and were rushed to the Central Regional Hospital where Kofi was pronounced dead on arrival.

He said the other victims later died in the night on admission and the bodies had been deposited at the same hospital mortuary for autopsy.

Inspector Azasoo said Eric later reported him self to the Moree police.
