Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mr George Alex Mensah, Eastern Regional Police Commander, has cautioned police officers who take delight in drinking alcohol whiles on duty, to stop because “drunkenness and policing are not bedfellows”.

He said the duties of the police officer involved the handling weapons which cannot be entrusted in the hands of drunkards adding that his administration would not tolerate any police officer found wanting in that direction.

ACP Mensah, who was speaking at the maiden Regional Police Commander’s parade at the regional police headquarters in Koforidua, said the police must change their attitude towards work and exhibit a high sense of professionalism.

He said the police uniforms should command respect from the public and added that police personnel had no excuse whatsoever to compromise themselves whiles on their duties.

ACP Mensah said they were not forced to wear the uniforms and so must put in the same effort that they queued for long hours to attain.

The Regional Commander said the police administration would not tolerate lateness and indiscipline adding that ‘closing from work was not closing from policing’ and urged the officers to be ready for the call to duty at any time.

He said official vehicles were not to be used for domestic errands, neither should drivers of police vehicles be allowed to be in mufti whiles driving official vehicles.

ACP Mensah urged the public to report any act of indiscipline by a police officer adding that feedback from the public was the only way to strengthen the police service.
