The Dutch government on Tuesday donated two buses to the School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS) of the University for Development Studies to ensure the success of a project it is implementing in the school.

The Dutch government, in collaboration with the UDS, is implementing a project dubbed the Netherlands Initiative for Capacity Building in Higher Education (NICHE) to equip staff and students of the school with modern practical healthcare delivery.

The project, which started in 2005, is due to end in 2015 and has over the years enabled medical and nursing students to translate theoretical work to practices especially during clinicals.

Madam Helen Bernot Ullero, Senior Programme Administrator of the Netherlands Organisation for International Cooperation in Higher Education, who presented the 30-seater buses to the School, commended the UDS for handling the project well.

Prof. Haruna Yakubu, the Vice Chancellor of UDS, acknowledged the good works of the school to the Dutch government and said the UDS is the only university in the country that practices a trimester programme under which a semester is devoted to community practical work.

He said students are able to detect early signs of epidemic at the community level and alert the Ghana Health Service for prompt action.
