The Director of Communications for the National Democratic Party (NDP) Ernest Owusu Bempah claims that the Chairperson of Electoral Commission (EC) Mrs Charlotte Osei has been disgraced over the final ruling by the Supreme Court on recent spate of disqualifications.

The Presidential nominee of the party Nana Kondau Agyemang Rawlings was part of 13 candidates who were disqualified by the EC but a Supreme Court’s ruling ordered the EC to allow the candidates rectify the anomalies on their forms.

The Parliamentary candidate for Asante Akyem North constituency said it was wrong for the EC to take an entrenched position of not giving the candidates the opportunity to be heard in the true faith of natural justice.

Speaking on Abusua FM’s Abusua Nkommo hosted by Kwame Adinkrah, he remarked that the ruling is a victory for Ghana’s democracy and multi party system.

Mr Bempah wondered why the EC chair was bent on infringing the fundamental rights of the candidates.

According to him, their candidate’s forms was not freight with errors as propagated by the EC and that they were ready to battle it out with the EC if the courts had not ruled in the favour of the candidates.

‘We were not surprised by the EC placing our candidate on the ballot,… the disqualification was based on assumption that the votes margin of the NDC in Volta region will be split if Nana Konadu is contesting in the race and Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom also sweeping votes in the Central region. Charlotte Osei and her other commissioners have been disgraced by the Supreme Court ruling. The ruling I think is a victory for our democracy and victory for human rights in this country. We would have battled it out with them if they had not heeded to the Court’s ruling,’ he said.

Nana Konadu had the second position when the EC balloted positions for the candidates on Wednesday at its office in Accra.

The Spokesperson for NDP envisaged that they will amass 70% in the Volta region.

‘We are happy that another Rawlings is appearing on the ballot. Definitely Ghanaians in Volta region will vote for Nana Konadu and vote against President John Mahama, they should keep dreaming that Volta is their world bank, we will take them by surprise,’ he stated.
