EC disqualifies 11 aspirants in 2024 presidential race

The Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) has disqualified 11 of 24 aspirants who filed their nominations to contest in the December 7, 2024, presidential election.

In a statement issued on Friday, September 20, 2024, the commission indicated that the aspirants were disqualified after a thorough examination of their nomination forms.

“Following the successful conduct of the Filing of Nominations from the 9th of September to the 13th of September, 2024, the Commission instituted a thorough examination of the Nomination Forms submitted by the Candidates to ensure conformity with requirements as set out in law,” the statement said.

The aspirants who were disqualified include the flagbearer of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Bernard Mornah; the flagbearer of Progressive People’s Party (PPP) Kofi Asamoah Siaw; as well as independent candidates Janet Nabla, Nana Stephens Adjepong, Paul Perkoh, James Kwesi Oppong, and John Enyonam Kwakwu Kpikpi.

The rest are Samuel Apea-Danquah, Desmond Abrefah, Dr Samuel Sampong Ankrah, and Nii Amu Darko.

The commission went on to list the 13 aspirants whose nominations have been accepted as follows:

• Mahamudu Bawumia - New Patriotic Party

John Dramani Mahama - National Democratic Congress

• Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen - Independent Candidate

• Christian Kwabena Andrews - Ghana Union Movement

• Daniel Augustus Lartey Jnr - Great Consolidated Popular Party

• Twum-Barima-Adu George - Independent Candidate

• Nana Kwame Bediako - Independent Candidate

• Akua Donkor - Ghana Freedom Party

• Hassan Abdulai Ayariga - All People's Congress

• Kofi Akpaloo - Liberal Party of Ghana

• Mohammed Frimpong - National Democratic Party

• Nana Akosua Frimpomaa - Convention People's Party

• Kofi Koranteng - Independent Candidate
