The Western Regional Office of the Electoral Commission (EC) recorded 90,480 voters in the just ended limited voters’ registration exercise with 344 applicants having their registration challenged.
Statistics available at the regional EC office in Sekondi indicated that, Jomoro recorded 4,135 voters, Ellembelle 3,268, Nzema East 2,398, Ahanta West 5,191, Takoradi 3,302, and Effia-Kwesimintsim 5,592. Others were Sekondi 2, 267, Essikado-Ketan 3, 789, Shama 3,593, Wassa East3, 070, Mpohor 1,666, Tarkwa-Nsuaem 7,222, Prestea-Huni Valley 7,714, Wassa Amenfi East 4,127 and Wassa Amenfi Central 3,049.
The rest were Wassa Amenfi West 3,188, Aowin 4,134, Suaman 1,039, Bibiani-Ahhwiaso-Bekwai 5,657, Sefwi-Wiawso 4,900, Sefwi-Akontombra 2,174, Juaboso 3,007, Bodi 2,198, Bia West 2,209 and Bia East 1,591.
The Regional Director of EC, Mr. Stephen Opoku-Mensah, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sekondi on Thursday that the exercise was successful and commended the various political party representatives and Ghanaians for monitoring the exercise.
He however, said, some prospective applicants had their ages and nationalities challenged by individuals and political party representatives.
Mr. Opoku-Mensah said those who had their registration challenged would therefore appear before the District Registration Review Committee for adjudication, and when exonerated would have their voters’ identity cards returned to them.
Some districts that recorded challenged cases included Aowin 62,Wassa East 26,Wassa Amenfi West 26, Ahanta West 27,Bia West 25,Bia East 31,Bodi 18,Juaboso16,Sefwi-Wiawso 12, Amenfi central 17, Effia-kwesimintsim18,Ellembelle 16,Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai10,Shama 5 and Wassa Amenfi East 9.
The Regional EC Boss said prior to the exercise, the EC established two recovery centres at Sekondi and Sefwi-Wiawso where broken down biometric registration equipment were replaced and repaired.
