Investigations by the New Patriotic Party have revealed that close to 65,000 names have been illegally expunged from the voter register compiled by the Electoral Commission of Ghana.
This revelation was made known by the Ashanti Regional Chairman, Mr. Bernard Antwi- Boasiko alias ‘Wontumi’.
In an interview with Okay FM, he indicated that as at 2012, the total number of voters, according to the EC was 14, 031,793 and the breakdown were as follows:
Western Region - 1, 425,158
Central Region - 1,231, 513
Greater Accra Region - 2, 792, 576
Volta Region - 1, 156, 740
Eastern Region - 1, 429, 682
Ashanti Region - 2,557,122
Brong Ahafo Region - 1, 245, 954
Northern Region - 1, 263, 462
Upper West Region - 364, 489
Upper East Region - 565,095
Aside this, Chairman ‘Wontumi’ claims an additional 856, 159 names were added to the already existing register when the EC allowed eligible voters to register their names in 2014.
The total number of voters should have stood at 14, 887, 952 but Chairman Wontumi adds that it is 14, 823, 429. This he says means that 65,000 names have been taken out of the register without any proper explanation to the NPP.
He indicated that the party would not allow matters to rest and would ensure a post-moterm is conducted on the register to know whether the names taken out were killed by Ebola or just vanished.
“Are they (EC) trying to tell us that from 2012 to date, 65,000 Ghanaians have passed on to eternal glory?. Did those souls contract the ebola virus before dying? Even in Yemen where there is war and lives are being lost, that wouldn’t be the case”, he said.
He vowed that the NPP wouldn’t allow the EC to continue with the new registration exercise they begun on 15th May, 2015 to allow persons who could not register and those who turned 18 years after the last registration exercise the chance to register.
