EC requests for urgent review of salary structure

Accra, Oct. 23, GNA - The Electoral Commission (EC) on Saturday appealed to the Government through the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning to urgently review upward the salary structure of workers of the Commission.

Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, EC Chairman in a letter dated October 11, 2004 to the Minister of Finance, and released to the Ghana News Agency said the salaries paid to workers of the Commission is very low and urged the government to urgently address the problem.

He reminded the Minister of the agitation of the workers of the Commission over the poor salary levels and other remunerations, which resulted in a massive demonstration in July and noted that the demand for salary adjustment comes from the cumulative loss in salary.

The EC Chairman said, "in any case, we wish to formally bring to your attention these agitations of our workers for salary adjustment...we plead with you to give serious consideration to this issues."

The Minister of Finance through Alhaji W. Alhassan Director (PAD) of Ministry of Finance, acknowledged the peculiar demands of the EC and assured the Commission in a release dated October 12, 2004 of the willingness of the Ministry to address the desires of the workers within the constraints of the economy.

A meeting between representatives of EC, Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Manpower Development and Employment had been schedule for Monday, October 25, 2004.

The Ministry further requested EC to furnish it with authenticated documents of the salary increment granted the EC from 2000 to 2004.
