ECG Introduces Digital Fault Detectors

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is set to introduce ultra-modern equipment that can detect faults experienced by customers on their meters beginning next year.

The installation of the digital fault detection equipment has become necessary following the company’s inability to detect individual problems encountered by respective customers of ECG presently, which makes it difficult for the company to immediately react to such situations.

Dr N.K. Smart-Yeboah, Director of Customer Service Management, disclosing this to the media in Accra recently during the launch of the company’s Customer Appreciation Week, said this will make management of customer problems easy from a central detection and information room at designated offices of ECG.

“Customers who tamper with their meters and other installations by ECG at their homes and offices will be exposed since the new meters will give information on everything that happened to it at what time and what specifically had been tampered with.”

He therefore called on customers of ECG to help the company by “doing the right things” so that it does not lose revenue. “Allowing non-employees of ECG to tamper with installations of the company at home and in the office costs ECG a lot of revenue.”

He therefore called on customers to ensure that every problem they encountered during the yuletide is communicated to the company so that trained staff of the company will handle the situation professionally.

Customers, who tamper with any equipment of ECG or allow a third party to do so, will be prosecuted.

Director of Engineering, ECG, Kwame Kpekpena, also noted that work was being undertaken at different areas to step up power supply across the country.

He said that ECG was increasing the capacity of its transmissions in a lot of places while work has also been completed at some places.

He mentioned that some places, where transmission capacity had been stepped up include Dome-Kwabenya, Ashongman, North Legon, Ashaley Botwe and Nmaijorn. Also completed is the Labone-Cantonments area.

He said: “A little bit more outages are expected in some places before an improvement in the utility can be witnessed there. This is to connect new installations to the old ones.”

He added that Dansoman has also seen some improvements while new sub-stations are being injected.

Awoshie, Santa Maria, Sowutuom, Mallam and Gbawe still have challenges, which are the result of third party activities, Ing. Kpekpena noted, adding that another substation was partly completed at Sowutuom, to boost the capacity of the area.

There are problems also at Nsawam and this cannot be completed before Christmas.

ECG has therefore given out emergency complaints line (0302 611611) to customers.
