The seemingly unpopular decision by the Electoral Commission to compile a new voters’ register regardless of the existing global health crisis is being brutally scrutinized by some concerned Ghanaians on social media.
#ECMustListen has been used to carry hundreds of tweets all of which express dissenting views about the relentless efforts by the Jean Mensa-led EC’s push to begin the compilation process by June.
The General Secretary of the NPP, John Boadu after an IPAC meeting with the Electoral Commission of Ghana on Wednesday, May 27, 2020, hinted that the compilation of the new voters' register is scheduled to take off by June ending to July.
However, he reiterated that the Electoral Commission together with other political parties agreed on using passport and Ghana card for registration.
Adding that guarantors will be used for people who do not have the above listed.
But this decision has been vehemently disputed by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) who boycotted the meeting in question. The opposition party has long held the view that the EC’s decision will disenfranchise millions of eligible voters.
Also, some Ghanaians who share similar views, mostly along the line of the health risks involved in compilation process took to their various Twitter handles to vent their spleen on the Electoral Commission and the ruling government.
Below are some reactions on Twitter:
In the next four years, any gov't that will be taking over gov't will say the voters’ register which is currently available is not credible so we have to take another 5M to compile another register

In the midst of this buffoonery being exhibited by Jean Mensa, the slay queen, the most surprising part is the silence of the Clergy! Just a couple of years back, they would hv mounted their pulpits casting innuendoes at Charlotte Osei and John Mahama! #ECMustListen pic.twitter.com/ijPSKap2Vc

This is the first time ever that the EC is attempting to develop a new register by excluding existing voter ID. Why should it be so?#ECMustListen pic.twitter.com/mlAnX9VnPv

When they say power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely, it didn't make meaning until @NAkufoAddo became pres and started showing his true colours by appointing for himself a new set of EC, attempting to rig the elections. But he cannot succeed. #EcMustListen pic.twitter.com/b8FJTgAw4q

The justification by the EC to compile a new voter's register is absurd especially when the entire world is battling with Covid-19 #ECMustListen
