EDITORIAL: Check These Holidays

Fri, 7 Jul 2006 Source: Public Agenda

Public Agenda was surprised when the Minister of Interior announced that Monday, 3rd July was to be a holiday because July 1st, the Nation’s Republican Day fell on a Saturday.

Sometime back, this very government announced that anytime a national holiday falls on a weekend; the day would be observed as such. It came as a surprise when the ministry declared Monday as a holiday.

Perhaps, the justification was the street carnival that had been planned for the Black Stars. Granted that, that was the reason, the Black Star’s victory ride could still have been more effective if Monday was a working day, since more people would have turned out.

No one needs a reminder that Ghana already has so many holidays on the national calendar; so adding more holidays to what we already have does not speak well of a country that is suffering from low productivity.
