EDITORIAL: What's Up NPP? a House Dividing?

Wed, 7 Nov 2007 Source: Accra Mail

The NPP succession programme is not looking neat at all. Yesterday, we reported on Mr. Alan Kyeremanten's complaint to the ruling party's vetting committee about the leakage of confidential information to the media.

As our story was hitting the newsstands, some other media, print and electronic were blaring forth material they claimed was leaked to them from NPP headquarters sources about the Vice President.

The so called leaked material was so scurrilous that we do not find it worthwhile repeating it here, but our investigations have revealed that the newspaper claiming the disclosures is in the pay of one of the aspirants.

As the day wore on, we received information that the Vice President who was due to be vetted may not face the panel after all. Reason: Committee chairman away on other assignments.

Now come on, are we serious or joking? This is a matter of grave political importance involving no less a person than the Vice President of the republic and it is being treated so shabbily. In this whole exercise of seeking for a third term, the NPP is not coming across as being committed enough.

It may all be about showcasing the party's democratic credentials, but it sure is looking like the proverbial shooting one's own foot. By the way, is the party going to investigate the leakages?

Our wish and hope: The party must.
