'EOCO will come after you’ – President Mahama issues warning to appointees

President John Dramani Mahama has warned his appointees that they could face investigations by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) after leaving office if they engage in acts of corruption.

Speaking during an engagement with Ghanaians in New York on September 25, 2026, Mahama said officials should not assume that accountability would end when they leave government.

He said while his administration was investigating alleged corruption under previous governments, those currently in office could also be subjected to investigations by future administrations.

“Even as we investigate the corruption of the past, if any person is indicted, then EOCO who comes after you...” he said.

Mahama also urged his appointees to see their positions as a responsibility to the Ghanaian people rather than an opportunity to enrich themselves or their families.

He said Ghana's demand for changes to the global order, including greater representation for Africa at international decision-making tables, must be matched by efforts to improve governance and accountability at home.

“When we come to this stage, and we come to the UN, and we speak with courage, and we say we want the global order to change, and want Africa to get a chance, we want a chair at the table, we want a rigged global order to change so that Africa can get a chance,” he said.

According to Mahama, African countries must also “put our own house in order” if they are to make a credible case for change at the international level.

He questioned why leaders would demand greater opportunities for Africa internationally while public resources were not efficiently collected and managed at home.

“Why would you demand something on the international stage, but then upon stealing your own money, you are not collecting money efficiently, everybody goes as soon as you get a position,” he said.

Mahama also criticised the practice of using political appointments to pursue personal interests, saying some people assume that obtaining a government position means they can “make yourself a family.”

He stressed that public officials have a responsibility to ensure that public funds are used efficiently.

“While we are making demands on the international world, we also as leaders have a responsibility to our people to make sure that every single dollar of the people's money is used efficiently,” he added.
