Koforidua, April 24, GNA - The Eastern Regional Steering Committee of the Convention People's Party (CPP) has denied that some constituency chairmen of the party have dissolved it.

A statement in Koforidua on Monday said that the Committee was constitutionally elected for a four-year term adding that, "the so-called chairmen have no mandate to put in place an interim committee".

It pointed out that since it has not contravened the party's constitution, the constituency chairmen had no right to dissolve it and appealed to CPP members in the region to remain calm.

The statement described the action as "a ploy to destabilise the party and create confusion". The Steering Committee said the statement by the chairmen that they do not recognise any Central Committee apart from the one that was in place before a court injunction in November 1999, is unfortunate.

It said that the regional secretariat would continue to operate normally and advised members to ignore what it called "those who want to destabilise the party for their selfish ends".

Nana Owusu Sekyere, First Vice Regional Chairman, Mr Kwabena Apea, Regional Secretary, Mr Alex Apau, Assistant Secretary and Mr Augustine K. Ackumey, Regional Treasurer, signed the statement.

Others were Mr C.O. Darko, Mr A.K. Donkor, Mr E.K. Mensah, Mr Seidu Banda, Madam Christaina Mills and Madam Bernice Akuffo, all members of the committee.

Last Saturday, some constituency chairmen of the party passed a resolution dissolving the committee.
