The Ministry of Education has announced plans to introduce subject-specific Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications in Senior High Schools (SHSs) to support the new curriculum.

But one may wonder why Ghana is integrating AI into the classroom, and what it means for both teachers and students.

This GhanaWeb article breaks down the rationale behind the initiative and the bigger picture of what the ministry wants to achieve.

What it entails

According to the education ministry, the apps were developed using Ghana’s curriculum resources, including teacher manuals, lesson plans, and assessment tools.

It will work both online and offline to make them accessible to schools in rural and urban areas.

"The rollout is being carried out in partnership with the Ghana Education Service (GES), the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA), the National Teaching Council (NTC) and the National Schools Inspectorate Authority (NaSIA)," the education ministry said in a statement issued on October 1, 2025.

The tools will support more than 68,000 teachers with lesson planning, classroom delivery, and student assessment, ultimately benefiting over 1.4 million learners nationwide.

The ministry noted that to ensure relevance and effectiveness, the apps are being piloted through weekly Professional Learning Community (PLC) sessions in all 712 SHSs, providing teachers with the opportunity to test the tools, collaborate, and share feedback.

It said the rollout will also follow a four-phase testing process covering technical accuracy, educational quality, user experience, and regional testing.

Unlike foreign tools that may not reflect local values, the AI applications have been designed using Ghana’s own curriculum resources, including teacher guides, learner manuals, and frameworks for cultural values, gender equality, and social inclusion.

According to the ministry,"This approach ensures that the technology remains culturally relevant and ethically grounded, tailored to the realities of Ghanaian classrooms."

Implementation

To prepare schools for seamless adoption, a nationwide training programme for more than 7,800 school-based facilitators is scheduled for October 2025.

"Pilot sessions have already started in 712 SHSs, where teachers have been trained through Professional Learning Community (PLC) workshops," the statement noted.

PLCs will give the teachers a structured platform to explore the apps, collaborate with peers, test tools in real lessons, and provide feedback.

Impact

The ministry said the digital tools would support over 68,000 teachers in delivering the new SHS curriculum.

It is expected to improve access to learner resources, improve learning outcomes, reduce the workload of teachers, and equip young people with the skills to thrive in the digital economy.

It stressed that the initiative is "Designed to complement, not replace, teacher expertise, stressing its commitment to ensuring AI integration in education remains locally led, ethically grounded, and teacher-focused."
