Accra, April 5, GNA - Heavy rainfall which was experienced in some parts of the country earlier in the week does not mark the beginning of the major rainy season in the country but was only a false start. Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in Accra, Mr Amos Narh, officer in charge of the Meteorological Services Agency, said the onset of the season was just a few days ahead.

He said with the haematin season completely over, the country was soon to experience the major rainy season. Mr. Narh said the present period was the time for farmers to clear and prepare their lands in anticipation of the rainy season during which crops would be planted.

He also said "If we should avoid flooding which often goes along with the major rainy season, now is the time to desilt gutters and drains in order to ensure the smooth flow of rain water that seeps into these gutters during the season."

Giving statistics of when to expect the initial showers that would mark the first and major rainy season of the country, Mr Narh said Accra would have its first showers from 8th to 24th April and the Western region 20th March to 6th April.

He mentioned that for the Brong Ahafo region and the Northern part of the Volta region would have the first showers to mark the major raining season between 14th to 18th April and Northern Ghana, 26th May to 12th June. Mr Narh, however, cautioned that it was necessary to leave a margin of error of about ten days regarding all the predictions.
