It was the 10th of his addresses since the outbreak of the Coronavirus in Ghana and it was not unexpected that Ghanaians would look forward to it.

He came to the homes of the populace and this time, made some pretty definite statements about easing earlier restrictions that had been imposed on citizens in March.

Aside from reopening schools for final year students and churches for 100 congregants at a time, President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo also noted that government has begun initiating processes towards the evacuation of stranded Ghanaians in other countries.

“Our border, by air, land and sea, remains closed until further notice for human traffic. However, given that there are Ghana residents stranded abroad, special dispensation is going to be given for their evacuation back to Ghana, where they will be subjected to the mandatory quarantine and safety protocols.” He stated Sunday evening.

Though other aspects of the speech have already begun attracting criticisms, this bit appears to have rather earned the President some credit in the eyes of North Tongu Member of Parliament, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa who didn’t fail to express this on social media, hours after the former’s speech.

“I am glad President Akufo-Addo has finally given the green light for the evacuation of stranded Ghanaians as I have long advocated. The government must always be responsive to the plight of citizens. Better late than never.” He wrote in a tweet.

Meanwhile, many are questioning some decisions made by the government in its most recent announcement.

Whilst some are describing the reopening of schools and churches as a recipe for disaster, some others, particularly the National Democratic Congress, has described Akufo-Addo’s decision to ease restrictions on public gatherings as a move aimed at carrying out “its rigging agenda through the needless and wasteful new voter registration agenda”.
