East Gonja NCCE embarks on ARAP

The East Gonja Municipal office of National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has embarked on a sensitisation exercise on the Accountability, Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Programme (ARAP) with the aim of promoting good governance.

The ARAP, being undertaken with support from the European Union, spans from April to June this year, and it is also to reduce corruption and improve accountability and compliance with the rule of law in the country.

So far, chiefs and people at Salaga and Hairdressers Association at Salaga were sensitised while other targeted groups to be sensitised as part of the exercise included; artisans, women groups, persons with disabilities, opinion leaders, faith based organisations, educational Institutions, and hospitals.

There will also be dawn and dusk broadcasts using a mobile van to reach the general public in the municipality.

Mr Gariba Sato, East Gonja Municipal Director of NCCE, who spoke at a sensitisation forum on the ARAP held at Salaga Chief’s palace for chiefs and people of the area, defined the various forms of corruption such as bribery and political patronage, saying they affected the country’s development.

He also spoke about the negative effects of corruption on the country’s economy and the citizenry saying “Corruption brings about under-development, increases the poverty level of citizens and the country’s debt and brings about injustice in society.”

Mr Sato emphasised the need for the citizenry to join the fight against corruption in society saying “We must make sure our leaders and duty bearers are accountable to us in compliance with the rule of law.”

Mr Duut Suguru, a staff of East Gonja Municipal office of NCCE, who also sensitised members of Hairdressers Association at Salaga, spoke about the National Anti-Corruption Action Plan (NACAP) explaining to them how they could support in the fight against corruption in the country.

The groups pledged their support for the fight against corruption in the country assuring of reporting any acts of corruption they in their communities.
