Eastern Naval Command holds open day to mark Independence

The Eastern Naval Command at Tema on Friday held an open day for civilians to interact with the military as part of activities marking Ghana's 46th Independence anniversary.

About 2,000 civilians were taken through a tour of the naval base, arms display, video-shows about the activities of the navy and a cruise.

The group comprised students from the Institute of Professional Studies (IPS), Chemu Secondary and Tema Secondary schools, pupils of first cycle institutions, workers and voluntary organisations as well as individuals.

In an address Sub-Lieutenant Marian Affoh, Command Secretary, said the day was instituted to enable civilians to have interactions with the military to know more about their work.

''This will enable civilians to do away with the fears and negative perspective they have about the military.''

Taking the visitors through the work of the navy, Sub-Lieutenant Affoh said naval personnel are there to defend the nation on the sea in time of war but they have additional responsibilities of ensuring that people without licence do not fish in Ghanaian territorial waters. ' 'We undertake daily patrol on the sea and also occasionally assist the police when the need arises. It is therefore, untrue that the navy has little work to do'', he said.
