Eastern Region Nurses Week launched in Koforidua

Mr. Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi, the Deputy Eastern Regional Minister, on Wednesday appealed to the media to dedicate more time to support the health development agenda of the country.

“The health sector has made a lot of strides but I believe the media can do more especially in the education of the general public on importance of early ante-natal clinic attendance, the need to prepare adequately for delivery and the importance of hygiene”.

Mr. Terlabi was launching the Regional Ghana Nurses’ week celebration in Koforidua organized by the Ghana Registered Nurses Association (GRNA) on Wednesday.

The week is being celebrated under the Theme “Nurses and midwives: caring and advocating for a peaceful Election 2012”.

Mr. Terlabi said the theme for the celebration was appropriate since without peace, people would not have the freedom to go about their duties and lives of the ordinary Ghanaian would be in danger.

Mr Terlabi reiterated the government’s commitment to maintaining peace, during, and after the December polls.

He said their advocacy for a peaceful Ghana in their celebration was a wakeup call for all and sundry, especially people in politics, to note that the interest of the nation was to be placed above party politics.

Mr. Terlabi assured them that government would continue to pay attention to the training and development of more nurses and midwives to meet the growing demand of the public.

He added that one of the core components of the “Better Ghana Agenda” of the government was the provision of quality health care delivery to all Ghanaians.

Mrs Adelaide Ansah-Offei, Lecturer at the School of Nursing, urged nurses and midwives to educate their clients who consult them on the need for peaceful elections and expose those who approach them with evil intentions.

She also appealed to politicians to guard against foul language or violent actions to help sustain peace in the country.**
