Eastern Regional Police Command arrests drivers

Koforidua, Jan. 25, GNA - The Eastern Regional Police Command arrested 49 drivers and motor bike riders for violating road traffic regulations since the beginning of the year. Out of those arrested 45 were prosecuted and 24 of them were convicted and fined various sums of money totalling GHC 3,406.00. Nineteen of the offenders are awaiting trail while two were acquitted and discharged. Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), in an interview in Koforidua o= n Tuesday, the Eastern Regional Commanding Officer of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU), Superintendent of Police James Sarfo=96Peprah, said the police were not interested in arresting drivers and fine them huge sums of money but the purpose was to ensure discipline among drivers and motorbike riders in the region. He said the high rate of indiscipline on roads among drivers and riders across the country was alarming and cautioned drivers to be extra careful t= o help minimize road accidents.
