Educate workers on HIV/AIDS at workplace - TUC official

Koforidua, April 28, GNA - Mrs Francisca Borkor-Bortey, Eastern Regional Secretary of Ghana Trades Union Congress (TUC), on Monday appealed to labour unions to educate their members on the National Policy on HIV/AIDS at the workplace.

She said there were provisions in the policy that frowned on discrimination against workers with the virus.

Mrs Borkor-Bortey, who was addressing the Eastern Regional Quadrennial Delegates Conference of the Health Services Workers Union (HSWU) in Koforidua, urged workers not to hesitate to draw the union's attention to any violations whenever and wherever they occurred. She advised the union to address itself to the problem of a decline in the level of commitment by workers as regards union activities and this does not augur well "for all of us".

The regional secretary commended the HSWU on important services being rendered to the people.

Mr Reynolds Ofosu Tenkorang, Assistant Chief Industrial Relations Officer of the HSWU, appealed to the National Union to continue with its educational programmes since no union could be strong if the executive were not adequately trained.

He called for the promotion of women at every level since they constituted a large percentage of their membership. Dr Ebenezer Appiah-Denkyrira, Eastern Regional Director of Health Services, in an address read on his behalf appealed to health workers to let staff ethics and code of conduct to be their guiding principle.
