Education Minister Blamed Over Salary Arrears

The administrative staff of the Ghana Education Service (GES) have blamed the Minister of Education, Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi, for the delay of their code numbers for the payment of salaries and salary arrears, when he served as the Director General of the GES.

The affected staff are mostly those who are promoted and put on new salary scale.

Aggrieved staff of the service, in a complaint to the Chronicle last week said attention of the then D-G was drawn to their plight since 1996 but nothing was done about it.

They said Ameyaw-Akumfi was much aware of their situation because he once assured them that steps would be taken to address them after they had marched to his office.

The Professor is reported to have even attributed the delay to the previous government.

They said it appears there is a relationship between the provision of code number and adjustments to the correct scale upon promotion, and said it could be due to the administrative bureaucracy and that those in authority do not care.

They, therefore, appealed to the new administration and the minister to expedite action on this since he shifted the blame on past administration.
