Eight communities disconnected as major Rivers overflow

Rescue team from the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) are expected to be dispatched to eight communities cut off due to the overflow of some major rivers such as Birim, Akukuo, Jejeti and river Sea in the Atewa District of the Eastern Region following heavy downpours recorded Thursday and Friday in the area.

Bridges linking the communities have almost submerged preventing commuters from crossing. Also submerged are farms.

NADMO officials at the District have described the situation as major disaster which requires emergency intervention hence sent SOS message to the National Headquarters through the Regional Secretariate for dispatch of boats and rescue team to be sent to the affected communities which are Akyem Abomosu, Akyem Mouso, Akwaboaso, Osinase Krobomu, Asunafo, Nkrukan, Amonom and Mampong.

Residents in the affected communities predominantly farmers are struggling to cross the river to their farms while the sick and pregnant women worse affected.

Harrison Adzamli, an official of NADMO in Atiwa District says the District is expecting some boats and rescue team from Regional and National Headquarters of the organization on Monday.

Already,the Jejeti Health Center has been shut down following devastating flood that hit the facility on Thurday.

In a related development, the New Abirim District Directorate of NADMO is also reporting of some 120 persons displaced in a flood disaster as river Afosu and Abohemaa have also overflown its banks Sunday after a downpour .A total of 20 houses have neen flooded destroying household properties.

The disaster has been attributed to encouragement of the river by a developer.

The Acting District Director of NADMO, Ivy Dokua tells Kasapa News, says the organization is considering demolishing a hotel built on the river ways obstructing its flow.
