Eight-month-old baby dies at WAJU Office in Kumasi

The Kumasi Police is investigating the circumstances leading to the death of an eight-month-old baby in the hands of her caretaker at the Kumasi Office of the Women and Juvenile Unit (WAJU) of the Ghana Police Service.

Madam Cecilia Beikuh, 54, the caretaker, who is currently helping the Police in their investigations, was about to hand over the little girl, Makom Monamee and her seven-year-old sister, whose name was not immediately given, to the officers at the WAJU when it was detected that the little girl was dead.

Mr Gideon Boateng of the Ashanti Regional Police Public Relations Unit, who briefed the Ghana News Agency, said Madam Beikuh told the Police that the father of the girls, one Monamee, who stayed at Krofrom, a suburb of Kumasi, approached her about three weeks ago to take care of his daughters while he proceeded to Nandom to perform the funeral rites of his wife.

He said the woman accepted the children to stay with her at her Dichemso residence.

Mr Boateng said the woman told the Police that after three weeks when Monamee was not showing up to take his children, she decided to send them to WAJU.

After the woman had narrated her story to the officers at the unit, she decided to hand them over when it was detected that the little girl was dead.

Mr Boateng said the body of the girl had been deposited at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) mortuary for autopsy.
