Ekow Micah contracts Lawyer to defend him

Ekow Micah, the musician accused of possessing a quantity of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp has secured the assistance a lawyer.

The court presided over by Mr Aboagye Tandoh last week had fixed today to commence hearing into the matter but his lawyer had prayed for an adjournment.

Mr John David Percy told the court that he had just been contracted to defend the accused.

According to him, after having a conference with the accused “some interesting revelations came up and he was therefore seeking a two weeks adjournment to prepare for the trial and bail application.

Meanwhile the prosecutor Assistant Commissioner of Police Moses Atibillah was not in court.

Chief Inspector E. Afful, who stood in for Atibilla, said ACP Atibillah was held up as a result of emergency assignment that came in the morning.

According to Chief Inspector Afful, he was surprised at the bail application issue raised by defence counsel.

The court adjourned the matter to August 26 for hearing.

Micah has, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge of possession of narcotic drugs without lawful authority.

Micah is said to have told the Police that he smokes the dried leaves in order to stimulate him in his music career and has therefore been remanded into lawful custody.

Narrating the facts of the case earlier, ACP Atibillah said Micah is a resident of Ogbojo, near Kokrobite in Accra.

He said on August 4, Micah was arrested by the Airport Police over an alleged extortion case currently under investigations.

ACP Atibillah said the following day, at about 1130 hours, the Police and the accused person visited his house to conduct a search and in the process, a quantity of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp was found concealed in Micah s “back pack”.

Prosecution said the exhibit is being forwarded to the Police Forensic Crime laboratory for examination.
