Ekumfi-Egyankwaa registration officers involved in accident

A team of four biometric voters’ registration officers were involved in a motor accident, on their way to registration centres at Ekumfi-Egyankwaa, near Otuam, in the Ekumfi District of the Central Region, on Wednesday morning.

Mr Eric Abakah Hagan, Mfantseman Municipal Electoral Officer, with oversight responsibility over the Ekumfi District, disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Saltpond.

He said that the officers were on their way to begin the second phase of the registration exercise and the driver of the taxi cab conveying them lost control and somersaulted and landed in a ditch.

Mr Hagan said the accident was caused by the slippery nature of the road as it was drizzling early that moment.

He said Ms Beneditta Coffie, registration officer, was referred to the Cape Coast Regional Hospital while the three others, Mr Charles Sey and Bright Amissah, both data entry clerks and Felix Ampiaw, a laminator, who sustained minor injuries, were treated and discharged at Essuehyia Health Center.

According to Mr Hagan, the three officers returned to their post but were badly traumatised and could not work for the day.

Concerning the progress of the registration in the Mfantseman municipality, he said 30,709 applicants out of the projected 74,000 persons had registered in the first phase of the exercise.

Mr Hagan said centres at Ekumfi had so far registered 11,000 applicants out of the projected 27,000 persons.

He appealed to prospective voters to patiently wait so that they could be registered at centres located at their polling stations in order not to create problems for the Electoral Commission during the 2012 Election.**
