Former First Lady and founder of National Democratic Party (NDP), Nana Konadu Agyemang-Rawlings, has called on Ghanaians to elect competent women to Parliament “because they play key roles in national development.”

The NDP leader made the observation on Accra-based Eezy FM to end the station’s 30 days programme dubbed, ‘GhanaFirst’ on Thursday, 30 march, 2017.

According to Nana Konadu, women who wish to compete for public positions should be educated and conscientised on the need to be effective, but not to see their appointments as “usual businesses.”

She explained that duties and responsibilities of women do not change since they are responsible for providing proper upbringing and instilling moral rights in the youth.

She was however, not happy that “some men and ethnic groups still think that women are lesser beings and therefore do not deserve to be educated.”

She bemoaned how some governments in the past failed to increase women’s participation in the day-to-day running of the country.

In her opinion, in order for the current administration to achieve its developmental goals, it must empower women for them to take their rightful positions in society.
