Elections to test our temperament as peaceful people

Tema, Dec. 21, GNA - The Ghana United Nations Association , (GUNA) has observed that the temperament of Ghanaians as a peaceful people would be put to test next year during the general election.

For this reason, he said: " We ought to tolerate one another by respecting divergent views, especially on political matters."

Dr. Awua-Asamoah made the observation when he inaugurated the Tema Community One Chapter of GUNA on the theme: “The Promotion of Peace and Development in Ghana, the Role of GUNA.”

The 19-member executive of the association has Madam Adjoa Botwe as President, with Mr. Kwaku Apprey, Mr. Issa Moro and Mr. Dickson Twum as the first, second and third vice presidents, respectively.

Dr. Awua-Asamoah reminded Ghanaians, especially politicians, that without peace and stability in the country, they could not in any way improve the lives of ordinary people.

He advised politicians to play the political game with a high sense of maturity without envy and the determination to undo their opponents.

Dr. Mike Awua-Asamoah, National Coordinating Director of GUNA said: "Let us do our best to consolidate the political stability we have enjoyed over the years.”

Dr. Awua-Asamoah advised members of the Tema Chapter of the Association to intensify its membership drive in order to spread the GUNA concept.

The Right Reverend Dr. Israel Billy-James, Patron of the Association, urged members to continue to champion the cause of peace and development of the world.

Bishop Billy-James, who is also the President and Presiding Bishop of the World United Bible Ministerial Association, pointed out that Peace must not be the agenda of tomorrow, but rather the concern of today, adding, “If we live in peace today, we have the guarantee of a better future tomorrow.”

He charged GUNA members to lead the crusade as ambassadors and brokers of peace in our communities, institutions, social gatherings and our homes.

Bishop Billy-James warned them not to allow the objectives and aims of the Association to be influenced by their parochial interests.

Mrs. Lynda Augustt Asare, Deputy Public Relations Officer of the Association, said as a voluntary and non-partisan organization, GUNA aimed among others, at promoting peace, human rights and sustainable development.

Madam Botwe, President of the Association, pledged the executives’ determination to live by the tenets of GUNA, and not to abuse the confidence reposed in them.

Dr. Awua-Asamoah later inducted the executives into office.
