The Ministry of Mines and Energy has said that the electricity supply situation has reached critical levels and the VRA and the Electricity Company can only supply 70% percent power of consumer requirement. The remaining 30 percent will be imported from Cote d'Ivoire and consumers who will need this extra supply will have to pay more for it. These were disclosed at an emergency news conference held in Accra on 18 January by the Minister of Mines and Energy, Mr. Ohene Kena. The news conference was attended by Chief Executives of the VRA and Electricity Company of Ghana and other officials of the two institutions. Explaining the reason for the current situation, the officials said there has been a steady decrease in the inflow of water at the Akosombo generation plant and if the trend continues, the dam will have to shut down. On how to determine the 30% extra power supply, the officials explained that electricity bills will clearly indicate the 70% and the extra 30% for all categories of consumers.
