Electrochem Ghana has dismissed allegations levelled against it in a recent investigative piece by The Fourth Estate titled “The Battle for West Africa’s Largest Salt Deposit.”
Setting the records straight, Electrochem Ghana said its concession spans 41,000 acres, contrary to 39, 000 acres in The Fourth Estate investigative piece, adding that the concession was legally granted and ratified by Ghana’s Parliament.
The company dismissed claims suggesting fishermen in the area are losing access to the lagoon, thereby affecting their livelihoods.
The company says it has rolled out various initiatives like the Community Pan Initiative and Tributer Scheme to empower locals through salt production and generate significant economic benefits.
A statement issued by Electrochem Ghana on Wednesday (11 December), in reaction to the documentary, also dismissed allegations of some human rights abuse in connection with its operations in the area.
The firm said it has made financial contributions, including over GHC 3.4 million in royalties and GHC2.7 million in ground rent from 2021 to 2024.
